Extracurricular Activities
Extracurricular activities give you the opportunity to stand out amongst other college applicants. Not only will you be able to try something new, but you'll also learn valuable skills that will help you in more ways than just college. There are tons of possibilities for extracurricular activities-don't worry about matching yourself to activities. Instead, make sure that the activities suit you!
What are the benefits of extracurricular activities?
Colleges look for students who have unique and diverse extracurricular activities outside of academics. You don't have to participate in numerous activities; some students are able to participate in several activities while others choose to focus steadily on just one. No matter how many activities you participate in, try to find a way that will show you have both initiative and leadership skills. Maybe you can organize a benefit performance with your chorus group, or host a canned food drive with your soccer team.
Through outside activities, you will be introduced to many experiences. You'll learn how to take risks, work with different types of people, and handle different situations. It's an opportunity to discover what interests you. All these skills help you adapt to college life-and to life in general!
What do your extracurricular activities say about you?
Colleges look at your extracurricular activities to find out more about you. A school will look for a balance between both academic and non-academic activities. Your activities tell colleges what those non-academic interests are and whether you'll bring diversity to the student body. Showing what is meaningful to you allows colleges to know you better, and your passion sets you apart.
Any activity outside of school can be beneficial to your college applications. Even personal hobbies may leave some impact. For example, say you love to write poems or stories in your spare time. If one of your choice colleges has an excellent writing program, you may want to discuss your passion for writing in your application essay. Your activities will boost your chances of getting into the college you want to attend.
What extracurricular activities are right for me?
You want to find an activity that you enjoy. It should be fun and likeable so that you'll be willing to stick to it. Balancing time is important; you don't want to be so weighed down by your activity that your grades start taking a nosedive.
If you can't think of any activities off the top of your head, there are various resources that can help you find that activity you're looking for. Ask your teachers or counselors for suggestions. Searching online can lead you to different programs available during the summer or school year. Pre-college programs and study abroad options are also offered. Even checking out local zoos or museums may lead to something. The possibilities are endless!
Whatever you do, be sure that what you choose is something you truly enjoy. Remember not to choose a program or activity just to look good on a college application. Do it for yourself!
